Planning: Magazine Title Focus Group Feedback

I have asked my focus group to give their opinions on the following selection of fonts for my film magazine title:
They all agreed that the last font is the most suitable for the genre of magazine, therefore it would look more realistic. However, I will also look at alternative options before making my final decision. I may also ask for peoples opinions who are not a part of my focus group, but instead the demographic of my film. This is in order to see if the magazine itself would appeal to the audience of my documentary film.

Production: Film Poster Audience Feedback

After receiving audience feedback from my classmates, I have made the appropriate changes to my film poster. The image below shows a screenshot of the responses I received.

After reflecting upon my feedback, I have made the necessary changes. For example, as you can see through the image below, I have removed the alcohol bottle which was a distraction behind the title. I did this by using the eraser tool on PhotoShop. This can be seen through the screenshots below.

I also decided to not recut the characters out of the main image as every response given indicates that this is not needed.
I have also decided that a slogan is not needed on the poster as I already have included a lot of text which conform to conventions of competitor products.
The image below shows a screenshot of my final ancillary product. However, I will ask my focus group for any improvements or suggestions to make it the best that it can be.

Research: Audience Feedback

The link above will take you to my questionnaire regarding my film poster.
I have made some alterations to the product in todays lesson and I feel that it is almost complete. Below is also a link to my trailer so far. However, it is not complete and the font, voice overs and the character within the interview are being changed. The quality is also much clearer on iMovie.

The link below will also take you to a form of questions with regards to my trailer so far.
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1yr9wvgOTnsGyOfxsmRMkLUhQ-ixTEi2vL1FCKGmAgTc/viewform

In todays lesson I have decided to add credits at the bottom of my film poster in order to add a sense of realism and provide the audience with extra information.

Research: Never Say Never Film Poster Analysis

As well as analysing Glastonbury The Movie In Flashback, I also decided to analysis the poster for Never Say Never. I chose to do this as similar to mine it is a documentary film and it also is categorized in the genre of music. I feel that after analysing the poster, I am more aware of what kind of language to use on my own poster as a way of persuading the audience to watch the film.

Research: Glastonbury The Movie

As I have found looking at the film poster for 'Glastonbury The Movie' so helpful, I have decided to begin annotating it for further inspiration. The image below shows the poster.

The following link provides access to the films website:
On the website, the trailer for the film is shown on the homepage. I will look at this in order to see what kinds of shots were used in order to adapt and improve my own, making it more realistic.
Press packs, blogs and social networking links are also provided which I will look at next lesson for more inspiration.

Progress: Film Poster Production

In todays lesson I have continued to create and edit my film poster.
I decided to use a font which resembled a stamp in order to make the poster more striking and eye catching. I placed it partly over the title as stamps tend to be placed on top of things, however I did not cover the whole title as it would be harder for viewers to read.
After taking out some research, I found a poster for 'Glastonbury The Movie', which has given me some inspiration. I took a screenshot of some of the text within the poster and placed it at the bottom of my own work in order to decide how I am going to lay out the rest of the text within my poster.
After looking at competitor products, I also noticed that posters tend to include either a rating out of five or a quote. Due to this I decided to add both to my product.

Production: Film Poster

After consulting my focus group, I have decided to use the image that I was planning to use on my magazine front cover on my the film poster instead. This is because they feel that it would be harder to add text around the image on a magazine cover.
I edited the picture to make it more striking and bright. The following images show the picture before and after:

I then decided to remove the background at the top of the image in order for the audience to not be distracted by background objects. I firstly decided to put the background image as white, as shown below, however then decided to change it to black in order for the colours to contrast.

I then came to a final decision for the name of my documentary as a whole, which is "V Festival: The Untold Story". After making a decision, I found an appropriate font and then experimented with which size I shall have it/ where I will position it.

Planning: Ancillary Products

I am considering using the following picture for the front cover of my film magazine. However, I feel that it may be hard to see the text. Therefore I will ask for feedback from my class mates/ focus groups.

Log: The Evaluation & Blog

In todays lesson I looked at the following link in order to gain an understanding of what I need to improve/ add to my work. I did this by looking at previous comments and feedback from examiners. I now feel that I need to refer back to my focus group more often and create animatics as a form of planning.

Research: Film Four

After looking through the Film Four website I have noticed that on the home page is a live forum of tweets. This highlights that the channel has an active audience as they like to engage and interact with one another. It also suggests that a majority of the target audience may be younger as they are into social networking and probably up to date with the latest technology.

Research: Project X

Although my trailer is going to be created for a documentary film, the film Project X has a similar narrative to mine. This is because the footage is also supposedly taken by a group of teenagers themselves and it focuses on the rebellious attitudes that the younger generation have. Due to this, I could reflect upon some of the codes and conventions used within the trailer which could potentially influence my work. For example, at the beginning of the trailer a clip is shown suggesting that the trailer contains scenes including alcohol, drugs and sexual behaviour.

Planning/ Production: Production of My Trailer So Far

Although my trailer is yet to be completed I have created a document which demonstrates what I have done so far. However, I still may add things to what I have already done as well make alterations.

Log: Progress

After deep consideration, I have decided to change the channel of which my product would be broadcasted. This is because I feel that after putting my footage together, it is more suitable for a documentary film instead of a television documentary. Due to this, I will make my footage into a trailer for a documentary film to be broadcasted on FilmFour, of which I will carry out branding research etc.

Although my product will no longer be broadcasted on BBC3 as it is now a documentary film, it still has various similarities with Sun Sex and Suspicious Parents which I have been using as an inspiration. As they both focus on teenagers binge drinking, it could be argued that mine now has a USP as it is a film instead of a three part programme. Due to this, viewers can watch the film as many times as they desire.
I have also referred back to my focus group and they agree with the idea and feel that the genre would suit a film.

Research: Transmedia

https://wordpress.bluefinlabs.com/blog/2013/01/09/the-transmedia-genius-of-pretty-little-liars/

Although my programme has a very different story line and is not similar in most ways to the series 'Pretty Little Liars', the website above shows how effective social media is in relation to an episode.

For example, the screen shot below shows statistics of how many comments were made about the show, therefore creating an active audience who can communicate with each other.
Similarly, a 'Social TV Conversation Gist' is also provided as it shows the most used/ popular words during the time that the programme was on. I could consider making one of these for my documentary as it is unique and interesting.

Research: Branding

After looking at the branding of BBC3, I feel that it is a good idea to create a Facebook and Twitter page for my programme in order to interact with the viewers, maintaing the channels active audience

Research: Branding

A programme that is similar to my documentary is Sun Sex and Suspicious Parents. This programme is broadcasted on BBC3 and therefore uses a variety of the codes and conventions that are suitable for the channel.
BBC 3 has a logo as shown below as a strong marketing tool in order to make the consumers aware of which channel to access their desired programmes.

BBC 3

  • BBC 3 is a mixed genre channel for young audiences.
  • Due to the young target audience, it produces documentaries that feature 16-34 year olds as they are young in both spirit and their mindset.
  • The key programme areas of BBC3 are: Comedy (eg. Bad Education), Entertainment (eg. Russel Howard's Good News), Drama (eg. In The Flesh), Documentary/Current Affairs( eg. The Call Centre) and Factual, such as 'Our Way'.  My documentary would probably come under the area of Factual as it shows statistics and facts about underage drinking and the unfortunate truths of what really happens at festivals. However, some may consider the programme to be put under the topics of Documentary and Entertainment as some may find it humorous.
  • Due to the young audience, BBC3 has its own website and social media sites which are accessible and marketed on the website. This shows that the programme are innovative and have an active audience.

  • It is evident that my documentary would evidently suit the channel of BBC3 as it focuses on teenagers/ young adults and is related to alcohol consumption, similar to other programmes that are broadcasted on this channel. Although it shares similarities to other documentaries that are a part of this channel, I feel that my product has a USP as it is recorded by those who are in the documentary themselves, creating a truer and more valid picture.

Research: Statistics

Underage Drinking:

  • 40% of teenagers in rough areas binge drink.
  • 48% of teenagers said that they had got their alcohol from their parents, while 23% of those getting very drunk at least once a month said their main source of alcohol was their parents.
  • An average of 13 under-18s a week end up in hospital because of drinking too much.
  • A survey of 5,205 teenagers showed that those who try to buy alcohol have no problem being served by staff (including some consumers as young as 10).
  • 93% of those aged 10-15 had successfully bought alcohol in pubs/clubs and 84% had made a purchase in shops

I found these statistics within the following article:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-388826/Parents-responsible-underage-drinking.html

Drug Consumption:

This article is in the Daily Telegraph and shows the dangers of laughing gas. For example, a young boy took what he thought was laughing gas but actually it was a toxic gas and he unfortunately passed away.

Research: Articles Relating To My Topic

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2190507/V-Festival-2012-Ten-suspects-arrested-man-beaten-death-just-yards-site.html   This article is about a death that occurred near the V Festival campsite in 2012. It is possible that the suspects of the murder were attending the festival.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-440210/Laughing-gas-craze-joke-health-watchdog-warns-club.html  This article shows the dangers of laughing gas, indicating that the side effects could even lead to death.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7317745.stm
This shows a variety of statistics about underage drinking in the UK. For example, it states that "teenagers are drinking an average of 44 bottles of wine or 177 pints of bear a year"

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2405107/Reading-festival-death-Private-schoolgirl-17-drink-spiked-unexplained-fatal-illness.html
The following article is about an incident that occurred recently at Reading Festival. Whilst she was at the festival she felt ill and decided to go home. Unfortunately a few days after returning, she passed away. Although it is not confirmed, it is a possibility that the death could be to do with drug consumption.

http://www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk/information/advice/drugs
This article is found on the official Glastonbury Festival website, asking those who are attending the festival not to bring illegal drugs with them. This indicates that drug consumption is becoming a major issue at festivals as different organizations are having to warn their customers.  The article states: "If you bring drugs with you, you risk having them confiscated and possible eviction from the Festival."

Research: Documentary Influences

The programme 'Sun Sex and Suspicious Parents' is broadcasted on BBC3 and shares a similar narrative to my future documentary. It is about a group of teenagers who go on holiday together and agree to have their experience filmed. They are unaware that their parents are also at the resort and watching their every move. The programme portrays teenagers as rebellious and risk taking, similar to my documentary. It attempts to show that the holiday is not just about the sun and the beach, but mainly about the partying. This is similar to my idea as it aims to show that festivals are no longer just about the music, but also the camping experience.

Research and Planning: Progess

During the summer I attended V Festival and got most of my footage. I was originally going to show the dark side of festivals however once I got there I decided to base the documentary on the campers experience.
I also have extra filming to do to make sure that I definitely have enough footage. I am planning to get more videos on a campsite, however am also going to include various interviews.

Research & Planning : Background Music Options

Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Heads Will Roll A Track Remix

I mainly like the beginning and instrumental part of this song however I also like from 2.25 to 3.01

Wiz Khalifa Ft. Snoop Dogg: Young Wild and Free

If I were to use this song, I would use the chorus as I feel that it relates to the topic and audience

Lil Jon: Outta Your Mind

Similar to the other, I also mainly feel that the chorus would be the most appropriate

Kid Cudi Ft. Steve Aoki: Pursuit of Happiness

LMFAO: Shots

If i were to use this song, I would use from 0.00 to 0.31 or/and 0.46 to 1.05  and/or  2.35 to 2.52

Research: Party Paramedics

The programme 'Party Paramedics' was broadcasted on Channel 4 and aimed to show the darker side of festivals. The documentary followed medical teams at 3 of the UKs biggest
