Research: Branding

A programme that is similar to my documentary is Sun Sex and Suspicious Parents. This programme is broadcasted on BBC3 and therefore uses a variety of the codes and conventions that are suitable for the channel.
BBC 3 has a logo as shown below as a strong marketing tool in order to make the consumers aware of which channel to access their desired programmes.

BBC 3

  • BBC 3 is a mixed genre channel for young audiences.
  • Due to the young target audience, it produces documentaries that feature 16-34 year olds as they are young in both spirit and their mindset.
  • The key programme areas of BBC3 are: Comedy (eg. Bad Education), Entertainment (eg. Russel Howard's Good News), Drama (eg. In The Flesh), Documentary/Current Affairs( eg. The Call Centre) and Factual, such as 'Our Way'.  My documentary would probably come under the area of Factual as it shows statistics and facts about underage drinking and the unfortunate truths of what really happens at festivals. However, some may consider the programme to be put under the topics of Documentary and Entertainment as some may find it humorous.
  • Due to the young audience, BBC3 has its own website and social media sites which are accessible and marketed on the website. This shows that the programme are innovative and have an active audience.

  • It is evident that my documentary would evidently suit the channel of BBC3 as it focuses on teenagers/ young adults and is related to alcohol consumption, similar to other programmes that are broadcasted on this channel. Although it shares similarities to other documentaries that are a part of this channel, I feel that my product has a USP as it is recorded by those who are in the documentary themselves, creating a truer and more valid picture.

Research: Statistics

Underage Drinking:

  • 40% of teenagers in rough areas binge drink.
  • 48% of teenagers said that they had got their alcohol from their parents, while 23% of those getting very drunk at least once a month said their main source of alcohol was their parents.
  • An average of 13 under-18s a week end up in hospital because of drinking too much.
  • A survey of 5,205 teenagers showed that those who try to buy alcohol have no problem being served by staff (including some consumers as young as 10).
  • 93% of those aged 10-15 had successfully bought alcohol in pubs/clubs and 84% had made a purchase in shops

I found these statistics within the following article:

Drug Consumption:

This article is in the Daily Telegraph and shows the dangers of laughing gas. For example, a young boy took what he thought was laughing gas but actually it was a toxic gas and he unfortunately passed away.

The following article is about an incident that occurred recently at Reading Festival. Whilst she was at the festival she felt ill and decided to go home. Unfortunately a few days after returning, she passed away. Although it is not confirmed, it is a possibility that the death could be to do with drug consumption.

This article is found on the official Glastonbury Festival website, asking those who are attending the festival not to bring illegal drugs with them. This indicates that drug consumption is becoming a major issue at festivals as different organizations are having to warn their customers.  The article states: "If you bring drugs with you, you risk having them confiscated and possible eviction from the Festival."

Research: Documentary Influences

The programme 'Sun Sex and Suspicious Parents' is broadcasted on BBC3 and shares a similar narrative to my future documentary. It is about a group of teenagers who go on holiday together and agree to have their experience filmed. They are unaware that their parents are also at the resort and watching their every move. The programme portrays teenagers as rebellious and risk taking, similar to my documentary. It attempts to show that the holiday is not just about the sun and the beach, but mainly about the partying. This is similar to my idea as it aims to show that festivals are no longer just about the music, but also the camping experience.

Research and Planning: Progess

During the summer I attended V Festival and got most of my footage. I was originally going to show the dark side of festivals however once I got there I decided to base the documentary on the campers experience.
I also have extra filming to do to make sure that I definitely have enough footage. I am planning to get more videos on a campsite, however am also going to include various interviews.
